Sleeping outside in a tent in the middle of Bigfoot territory has Kalista and Leandra more than a little frightened. Determined to demonstrate bravery, the best friends rely on Caleb and Owen, self-renowned adventurers, to protect them. Hiking the secluded ridges, the girls meet fellow expedition partners that hire the Critter Getters, Caleb and Owen, during guided Bigfoot excursions. Exploring day and night, they eventually come face to face with one of their deepest fears. This tightknit group tentatively treads the scary world of the mythical, all the while learning more about each other, forging deepened friendships. Caleb and Kalista feel the twinges of first love, while Owen shares a surprising, devastating loss with everyone. Leandra remains the comic relief with unexpected quips in times of stress. During their journeys and talks, the quartet becomes closer and realizes their realities may actually be scarier than any Sasquatch could ever be.

I was sure I was going to love this book and I did like it, but just not as much as I'd hoped. I bought the paperback at a convention and had been told that all the books were standalone and the first book didn't need to be read in order to understand this one (I would've bought the first book, but it wasn't available). If you're considering reading this one first, I'd strongly urge you not to. This is one series that needs to be read in order. I was totally lost, since the book picks up with a big event having just happened at the end of the last book which is still being discussed at the start of this one, since it hadn't been resolved. Since I hadn't read the first book, I was really floundering to figure out what was going on and who all the main characters were. It really felt like this was part 2 of the first book more than a true sequel, especially since this novel was only about 150 pages long and the first book was only about 70 pages. Together, they probably would've been book-length and told a complete story.
That aside, I really did like the characters and I love books about creepy or weird situations. I also love sweet romances and this one was very nicely done. I liked seeing the evolving relationships. I think the other reason I was a little disappointed was that the setup was supposed to be really creepy or thriller-like, with lots of suspense, but we start seeing into the creature's head pretty early on and quickly realize that he poses no real threat. He doesn't intend them harm, though he is obsessed with one of the female characters (I'm not sure why, perhaps this was set up in book one). We still get some nicely suspenseful scenes up to that point, but in the end, nothing big or scary happens, which was disappointing. It was nice, I guess, to see a twist on the normal monster story, but I kept wanting something life-threatening or super dramatic to happen to pay off all that buildup. We do get a nice inter-species bonding moment and more understanding of another species, but that's all.
I would definitely read more of this series (the first book, too, hopefully) and give it another chance. The banter between the friends was cute and the premise was intriguing. I loved the cover, too. I hope the next book is longer and has a better climax, but still keeps all the great friendship and romance moments.
