When a mysterious illness begins to sweep through Noctem Falls affecting the children, Eleanor Kimball is called to the city to see if she can determine what is wrong. As a pediatrician Eleanor loves children and desires many of her own, however, after several dating disasters she has not only sworn off men, but has given up her dream of a family, and the promise of a destined mate.
After discovering Grant in Noctem Falls she is faced with her own insecurities and finds it hard to believe in his love.
Grant Douglas is a man of few words and doesn’t do well surrounded by others. He is scared to death of finding a mate. He believes the harshness of his past, where he struggled to survive, didn’t cultivate a gentle heart. After a series of terrifying nightmares where his mate is at risk, Grant has decided he doesn’t want a mate at all.
When he meets Ellie, he realizes there are some things worth fighting for. Even if it means putting himself out there by becoming the Alpha he was born to be and facing the power he desperately tries to hide.
As Ellie starts to believe in Grant’s love it will take every ounce their combined strength to discover why the shifter children are suddenly falling ill before it’s too late.
My Defender Bewitched and Bewildered Book 8 edition by Alanea Alder Paranormal Romance eBooks
I have to say that this book had so many high points and low points that you won't know why you are crying and laughing at the same time. Here we meet Declan's mate and we find that the City of Night is once again in trouble. This book takes place only a few short days after the last book so the timeline is still fresh. You will be cursing the author as you cry and as you laugh. She told me once that she'd add Leroy to a book and I was so happy to see that she put that scene in. As Meryn tells them to go look it up on youtube you should too! As a long time World of Warcraft player that is the one thing we have all done at least once or maybe twice.. run into danger without fear and kill everything you see!You will love this new story more than any of the rest just because it has so much depth to it. The storyline tells of his mates struggle with her body and what she feels is outside societies standards. She fights so hard to be happy with being a curvy girl instead of a stick figure and you will fight with her. We have all struggled with something and you will share her pain and joy as she learns how to be happy with what she has.
Best book Ever!

Title My Defender
Series Bewitched & Bewildered
Author Alanea Alder
Designation Book Eight of Series, Full-Length, **Can Be Read As Standalone, No Cliffhanger #paranormalromance #fantasy #shifters #vampires #fae #witches #sprites #adultcontent
My Rating Five Delightfully Entertaining Stars*****
**Each book of the Bewitched and Bewildered series features a different couple finding love along with their very own happy ending and can technically be read as a standalone. However, there are recurring characters and an underlying interconnected conflict that play a major part in all the books, therefore to avoid spoilers, I highly recommend reading the books sequentially.
OMG! I loved, loved, loved My Defender. Alder's books are like crack for us paranormal romance junkies! I can see it now Room in a church basement, a circle of chairs, surrounded by a group of grim faces, and I stand and say, "Hello, my name is Judy and I'm an Alanea Alder paranormal romance addict!" lol... All joking aside, Alder's books really are addictive. They're like potato chips; you can't stop with just one! This is the eighth book of the series and each story gets better and better! I can hardly wait to dive into the ninth! lol... I love unique paranormal romance, addicted to danger, action, adventure & suspense, completely smitten with sexy, alpha heroes, adore sassy, courageous heroines, and there's nothing I enjoy more than a few mind-bending plot twists along with a generous infusion of laugh-out-loud humor, but when I can get it all in one exceptionally well-crafted and beautifully written book, I'm in absolute heaven! And that's exactly what Alanea Alder delivered - AGAIN - in My Defender, the eighth full-length paranormal romance in her riveting and highly imaginative Bewitched & Bewildered Series. Did I like this book? No, I LOVED it! Was it perfect? No, but it was perfect for me. There were a few little boo-boos missed in the editing process, but nothing that distracted me from the story. Would I recommend it? You bet, and I am but only for adult readers since it does contain explicit language, some violence, and steamy, dreamy sex. Will I read this author again? Absolutely which is probably the best recommendation I can give! As a matter of fact, after completing the first book of this series, I raced back to and purchased the remaining nine books and signed up for her newsletter, which speaks volumes as to how much I enjoyed this author's work! And finally, was I entertained? Completely! I was glued to my chair, white-knuckling my ereader, my heart fluttering wildly in my chest as the pages flew as quickly as the time!
The series takes a bit of a turn in Book 6 when Unit Commander Aiden McKenzie and his firecracker mate Meryn leave Lycaonia to visit vampire pillar city Noctem Falls, Naturally, they are accompanied by Meryn's squire Sei Ryuu and, of course, Felix the sprite along with former Noctem Falls resident Elizabeth Monroe and her mate Gavriel Ambrosios. Then in Book 8, they are joined by Colton, Rhei, Kendrick, and Anne. Aiden, Meryn, Ryuu, Felix, Beth, Gavriel, Colton, Rheia, Kendrick, and Anne are all recurring characters readers have gotten to know in the previous books of the series and always add so much to each story. We're also introduced to an entire new cast of intriguing characters in Book 6 but the primary couple in this story is enigmatic unit warrior wolf-shifter Grant Douglas and kindhearted elephant-shifter Doctor Eleanor 'Ellie' Kimball, world-renowned pediatrician and medical researcher. I fell in love with the fierce, stoic, man-of-few-words, and always scowling Grant Douglas though he's also a bit of a mystery. But once again, wait until you find out who and what he his! Oh my! Shhh... No spoilers from me. And the sweet, shy, humble and extremely self critical Ellie is the epitome of keen intelligence, generosity, kindness, and heartwarming devotion to children and those she loves, like her lovely grandmother, retired nurse Marjarom Johanson, who accompanies Ellie to Noctem Falls, is an absolute delight. At first glance, Grant and Ellie appear to be total opposites but were so perfect for each other! Ellie was just the woman to see the gentle, generous, kind soul beneath the layers of Grant's stern nature and self-doubt! Both of their stories just broke my heart and one-year-old orphaned toddler Benji was soooo adorable! Sigh... So dreamy! And naturally, Meryn 'the menace', her minions Jaxson and Noah, along with her two newly adopted twin 'baby Keelans' provide loads of laughter and shenanigans galore! And once again, this story ripped my heart out of my chest! I snickered, snorted, sniffled, snuffled, chuckled, and outright ugly cried through the entire story! This one will really tug on your heartstrings! But just a little warning, folks, don't start this book unless you have plenty of time; you will not want to stop until you reach the last page. I should know; I've spent the last week binge-reading the entire series and falling asleep holding my every night! lol... Alanea Alder, you're killing me! If you enjoy perilous danger, intense drama, agonizing angst, pulse-pounding action, nail-biting suspense, side-splitting humor, heartwarming romance, and a few mind-blowing plot twists that you'll never see coming, then this book is screaming your name. Extraordinary world building, exceptional character introduction/development, along with skilled plot progression make this series a fabulous, can't-put-down read! Thanks for the recommendation Fran Zoch!
This was another amazing book in the Bewitched and Bewildered series. I absolutely fell in love with Grant and Ellie. Some of the struggles they faced in this book were so real. If felt like I was right there with them experiencing all the same things. Of course it had a good amount of humor too. I was happy to see the return of some of my favorite characters from the previous books. I recommend this series to anyone who likes paranormal books mixed with romance and comedy.
2.5 stars. This one really aggravated me with its carbon copy style of books 6 & 7 and Really unsatisfying end. The writer has too many plot lines going on in these last 3 books & isn't really addressing any of them well. There's too many characters, too much insta-love, too little action, and a mish-mash of events occurring. There's no dramatic or comic buildup. A lot of potential with the world build but wasting it big time.
Entertaining but disappointing too. Books 6, 7 & 8 read like long installments of an unfocused & endless serial. I was excited to see the gang head off to a different pillar city - although I would have liked to see the problems in Lyconia resolved first. Unfortunately, the change of venue seems to have triggered change of style. The stories are briefer, less complex, less action & less plot oriented. Each of these 3 books introduces a new evil perpetrator but the situation remains unsolved at the end of each book - leaving me with an unsatisfied feeling. Then you start reading the next in the series & the unresolved evil problem of the previous book seems largely forgotten - not affecting character behavior or playing a part at all in subsequent stories! Books 1-5 had the invisible ferals headed by a mystery leader - just as the gang is getting a handle on them, off they go to the next pillar city where they make a brief appearance & are gone - not to reoccur in Books 6, 7 or 8 & no new attacks in Lyconia. Book 6 has a hidden attacker who is never found & again - barely a footnote in books 7 or 8. You could argue that the bad guy is discovered in book 7 but even though he's a feral - isn't killed but jailed instead & never mentioned in book 8. How did he get into this secure city that requires fae intervention & escorts? Book 8 kids are being stricken will an illness but the story ends without resolution & no concern that the contagion can pass onto the pregnant females or baby they're carrying in & out of the sick bays. ???
As another reviewer noted - the insta-love isn't surprising in a paranormal world with mate components - but in these 3 books the relationships are so seamless, its boring. More script is given to the childhood angst of each and how they were unloved - only to find they have family who loves them after al. After 3 books with this same script - I'm disappointed.
The writing is still entertaining as is the original heroine Meryn. Her antics begin to border on stupid though & her mate becomes more and more of a cardboard character. By book 8 - the wealth of characters with similar names becomes overwhelming & hard to keep track of. So disappointing - I so wanted to see more from this writer in the other pillar cities. I was so entertained by books 1-5 that I thought her refreshing style would continue on.

Here we meet Declan's mate and we find that the City of Night is once again in trouble. This book takes place only a few short days after the last book so the timeline is still fresh.
